The Secret Language of Trainers

Our gym is located in New Jersey and staffed by fluent English speakers. And yet, based on some of the looks we get from our clients during their training sessions, you might think that we speak a foreign language. So before we contact Rosetta Stone to create an instructional DVD that translates what we're trying to say, we figured we'd give you a quick crash course in "trainer speak."

   
 

"That's it" means, "Good job." Not, "Stop."

   
Here are some common misunderstood words and phrases and their true meanings.  We hope you find this cheat sheet helpful in building an ever-deeper relationship with your trainer.

Relax. Means, "Stop what you are doing so we can move right to the next exercise." Not, "Take a load off."
That's it. Means, "Good job." Not, "Stop."
Just a few more. Means, "Keep going until we say stop." Not, "Do three more and stop."
Whenever you're ready. Means, "Now." Not, "Whenever you're ready." (It sounds nicer than "now," though, doesn't it?)
Good. Means, "You're doing well." Not, "Stop."
Take a quick drink. Means, "Take a quick drink." Not, "Time to do some lollygagging while you leisurely sip some water."
We're gonna do 15. Means, "I'll do one with you and then you keep going until you've done 15 mark." Not, "We're going to complete 15 reps together." (This is otherwise known as "team work.") 
Whenever you're ready. Means, "Get your butt moving NOW." Not, "Whenever you're ready."
How is your food intake? Means, "How many calories are you taking in?" Not, "How yummy has your food been?"
How much cardio have you done? Means, "How much time have you spent doing legitimate cardio exercise?" Not, "How many times did you run up and down the stairs while you were cleaning the house?"

And here are some words and phrases our clients use that we just don't understand:

I can't breathe. How can that be true if you had enough breath to actually say "I can't breathe?"
It burns. Isn't it supposed to?
Take it easy on me, I drank too much last night. We hear this as, "I really need to get my butt kicked today."
Take it easy on me, I have to work out again tomorrow. This is one phrase we don’t understand at all. To us, it also sounds exactly like, "I really need to get my butt kicked today."
